SMART Initiatives

ENL Property’s SMART Initiatives

ENL Property’s subsidiaries are implementing various initiatives to develop the company’s land assets into integrated living spaces that generate sustainable value. Here are some examples:

Moka’mwad, a citizen
collective on the move

Moka City Limited is the promoter and developer of Moka Smart City. This ENL Property subsidiary wants to incorporate the needs and aspirations of residents into shaping the community life of their chosen city.

The Moka’mwad citizen collective was established for this purpose in 2018. This citizen’s initiative is the ultimate way to build connections between existing residents and newcomers. The collective acts as a driver, catalyst and pillar for the city through organising and co-organising multi-themed activities. The goal is to encourage the emergence of innovative proposals involving all stakeholders in Moka.

Soft mobility

We are developing various soft mobility initiatives to promote zero carbon commuting:

Electric bikes and scooters have been introduced in Moka Smart City. These eco-friendly vehicles help avoid traffic jams on intra-city trips or wasted time looking for parking.

The Promenade is a large pedestrian avenue that will ultimately connect all the neighbourhoods of Moka Smart City. It is a great place for a walk with the family or outdoor relaxation. Sports enthusiasts can also use it for cycling or jogging.

What better option than carpooling to reduce CO₂ emissions, save time compared to bus travel and make new friends! We have teamed up with Commute, a Danish carpooling app, to create a dedicated interface for Mauritius. The app can be downloaded for free on Google Play Store and Apple Store.

Waste segregation

Various waste sorting initiatives have been launched in Moka:

Waste sorting bins in
our residential developments

We have provided the waste disposal areas of apartment blocks delivered since 2020 with sorting bins. They are divided into three categories (non-recyclables, recyclables and organic waste) with a different colour code for each category. These bins are emptied by the Moka District Council, our partner in promoting recycling in the city.

Moloks

We have installed four voluntary drop-off points in September 2020 in Telfair, Helvétia, Vivéa and Courchamps. Each site has three recycling containers supplied by the Finnish brand, Molok. Paper/cardboard, glass and plastic/aluminium are collected and sent to various recyclers on the island.

Organic waste digester

We purchased an organic waste digester in 2021 to enable the smart city to produce compost Made in Moka! Some of this compost is used to fertilise fields in the area and the rest is sold.

Waste recycling bins
in offices

Oficea’s tenants can take part in waste sorting since August 2021. Bins have been installed in all buildings under its responsibility to dispose of batteries, light bulbs, small IT equipment or even coffee pods.

Recycling of
construction waste

Oficea is seeking LEED Green Building certification for all its future buildings and is committed to promoting low environmental impact construction. In addition to waste prevention and reduction, sorting containers have been installed on construction sites to encourage recycling of debris.

Green energy

EnVolt spearheads the ENL group’s sustainable energy development initiatives. This ENL Property start-up provides tailor-made solutions to companies that want to improve their energy self-sufficiency.

EnVolt has started by offering its services to ENL group subsidiaries. The company’s collaboration with Moka came naturally as the city has also been focusing on green energy for several years! Five rooftop photovoltaic installations were inaugurated in 2019 with EnVolt’s support. They have an annual capacity of 2,353 kWp (kilowatt-peak) – equivalent to the annual consumption of 2,000 middle-income Mauritian households. There are photovoltaic panels on the roofs of a number of buildings at Vivéa Business Park, allowing them to generate part of their daily energy needs using solar energy.

Other green energy production projects are under consideration.
